Medgar Evers, born in Decatur, Mississippi, was a civil rights activist and the Mississippi state field secretary for the NAACP. After serving in the second World War, Evers worked to overturn segregation at the University of Mississippi, segregation of public facilities, as well as working to expand the opportunities of African Americans. In 1963, Evers was assassinated by a member of the White Citizens Council in Jackson, Mississippi, which was a group formed to resist integration. Evers legacy manifested in numerous ways, like his widow, Myrlie Evers, becoming a noted activist and serving as the nation chair of the NAACP. His brother, Charles Evers, was the first African American to be elected as mayor of a city in Mississippi.
